Powerball jackpot surges to record $1.3 billion

Delaware Public Media

The record for the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history continues to climb as no one bought a winning Powerball ticket for Saturday’s nearly $950 million prize.

Right now, the jackpot stands at $1.4 billion, with an $868 million cash value. That's up from the initial announced pot of $1.3 billion, and  is almost certain to increase before Wednesday’s drawing due to spikes in ticket sales.

To win, players must match five numbers plus the Powerball number with odds at more than one in 292 million.

No one has drawn all six numbers correctly since before the Nov. 4th drawing when the game restarted with a $40 million jackpot.

The largest previous jackpot totaled $656 million and was split among three winning Mega Millions tickets in 2012.

The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday just before 11 p.m.

Powerball is played in 44 states – including Delaware - as well as the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
