Delaware State University officials say one person was shot at school's Living and Learning Commons on Route 13, just north of the school's main campus Monday afternoon.
The shooting reportedly occurred around 4pm in the Living and Learning Commons parking lot. The victim, a male student, was taken to Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover treated for what were called non-life threatening injuries.
According to university officials, no arrests have been made as of 8:30 pm Monday and the shooter remains at-large, but a lockdown of the main Dover campus that began at 5:30pm was lifted shortly before 8pm.
We believed that our students were no longer at danger and we lifted the lockdown at approximately 7:50 p.m.,” said DSU President Harry L. Williams in a statement. “Our police are aggressively investigating this incident and student safety remains our paramount priority.”
The Living and Learning Commons is the site of a former Dover Sheraton hotel, converted by DSU into an off-campus residence hall and meeting space. It also home to DSU's first year Early College High School charter school.
DSU has previously dealt with a campus shooting. Two students were shot on campus in September 2007. One student, Shalita Middleton, died from her injuries just over a month later while the other student survived. A then-freshman student, Loyer D. Braden was charged in the shooting, but the charges were later dismissed after a judge ruled prosecutors withheld evidence.
Delaware State University is closed on Tuesday for Election Day.
