The state’s Charter School Accountability Committee says Wilmington’s Moyer Academy should close. The panel Friday recommended the school’s charter be revoked at the end of this school year.
The accountability committee cited academic issues as the main reason for its recommendation. Moyer’s test scores last year were the lowest in the state with only 23 percent passing the reading exam and only 10 percent hitting the mark in math. Six percent were proficient in science testing and none in social studies.
The committee also pointed to violations of state and federal law regarding services to students with disabilities and Moyer’s 61 percent out-of-school suspension rate as factors.
The state placed Moyer on formal review last month and has already held one public hearing on its status earlier this month.
Another public hearing is scheduled for September 10th in Wilmington and the state will take public comment through September 15th.
A final decision on Moyer’s fate comes at the September 18th State Board of Education meeting when Education Secretary Mark Murphy offers his recommendation on the school’s status.
