State officials stress boating safety as Memorial Day weekend approaches

Memorial Day weekend means many boaters will be back on Delaware’s waterways, and DNREC wants to make sure they stay safe.

As part of National Safe Boating Week, DNREC is reminding those out heading on the water of some important rules and recommendations.

Senior Cpl. Carl Winckoski with DNREC Fish and Wildlife Enforcement says wearing a life jacket is the most important thing you can do to stay safe.

“80 percent of people involved in any kind of accident, if they’re wearing their life jacket they’re not going to drown," said Winckoski. "A small percentage does, but a life jacket will prevent a good majority of drownings. So we’re pushing the message for people to wear their life jacket.

Winckoski adds that all kids under 13 must wear a life jacket at all times, as well as anyone jet skiing or water skiing.

He also notes that the rules regarding drinking and operating a boat are the same driving a car as on the highway. A .08 blood alcohol level constitutes boating under the influence and is against the law.

“People go out on the boat and are having a good time and being on the water is fun, but sometimes alcohol get the best of them and they don’t realize there are laws against it," said Winckoski. "And Alcohol in your system greatly increases the possibility of you having an accident."

He also recommends paying attention to the weather forecast and realize conditions can change quickly.

Safe boating courses are available online or in person. They are mandatory for anyone born after January 1, 1978. Information on how to sign up for a course can be found at DNREC's website.
