Great Delaware Kite Festival returns this week

If someone tells you to go fly a kite this week, there’s a good chance it’s not an insult.

On Friday, Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes will host the 46th annual Great Delaware Kite Festival.

Betsy Reamer, Executive Director of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce says the Sussex County event is a rite of spring for the First State.

“Everybody’s been inside for all winter and it’s an outdoor activity and we have a glorious location," said Reamer. "You couldn’t find a better location, we’re close to the ocean so we always have wind. The sky is just filled with hundreds and hundreds of kites.”

Competitors vie for prizes in a wide range of categories including the highest kite award, the open individual ballet, and free-flight performance accompanied by music. Kite fliers are judged in three separate age groups - kids, teens and adults.

Reamer adds the festival, which draws thousands of spectators from across the region, also features food vendors, merchants and an aerial display from kite flying experts.

Another fun thing is that we bring in professional stunt kite fliers and they do exhibitions in between the kite competitions so its great for the kids to see what a little practice will produce,” said Reamer.

And it’s not too late to launch your own kite. Participants can register for the event Friday morning at 9:30 and the competition will kick off one hour later.

The event is free but normal park entrance fees apply.
