Delaware’s Department of Transportation laid out a little more than $16.3 million in winter storm cleanup this year.
That’s still below the record-breaking year of 2010, which saw the state spend about $18 million on storms. In that year, DelDOT began to cut back on other services to offset the high cost of storm cleanup.
Salt remains DelDOT’s largest expense this winter season. More than $6 million has been spent so far on 96,000 thousand tons of salt.
DelDOT has also paid out $3 million on over 100,000 hours of overtime pay for employees.
Another possible storm this week and clean up during the late summer and fall hurricane season could add to DelDOT’s costs before the year is over.
