Stormy winter ranks as one of snowiest, and isn't ready to quit

This stormy winter in Delaware is literally inching up the all-time snowfall list.

Monday's winter storm officially dumped 4.5 inches on Wilmington according to measurements at New Castle County airport.

That brings the overall accumulation for Wilmington up to 52.9 inches for the season.

Sarah Johnson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, says that pushes this winter up the list of snowiest all-time.

"We have not broken any records as of yet, but we have moved up as far as places," said Johnson. "The only winter that was snowier for Wilmington was the 2009-2010 winter."

That winter saw 72.8 inches of snow.

Wilmington has been keeping snowfall records since 1894.

And Johnson adds winter isn’t ready to loosen its grip on the region just yet.

She says that cold temperatures will stick around for awhile.

"In the wake of the storm system moving away, we’re looking at skies clearing out, as well as winds dropping off quite a bit," said Johnson. "Unfortunately that combination means we are going to get very cold."

Temperatures are expected to remain in the single digits or teens for most of Delaware through Tuesday. The First State could remain near the freezing mark for most of the week.
