About 50 members of the conservative Delaware 9-12 Patriots group rallied in front of Legislative Hal Tuesday, lobbying against a bill that seeks to restrict gun access for those deemed dangerously mentally ill.
State senators plan to reconsider the legislation after it suffered a surprising defeat near the end of last year’s legislative session.
The National Rifle Association initially opposed the bill during its successful journey through the House, but now says it stands neutral after a handful of amendments eased their concerns.
But Theresa Garcia, executive director for the 9-12 Delaware Patriots says those amendments didn’t lesson her worries.
“We’re not satisfied that they do and why do we need this bill? We already have a law that will prevent people that are [mentally ill] from having guns.”
Senators need to rescind last year’s vote by the end of the legislative day or the bill will need to be reintroduced. That would mean gaining House approval again – which could prove more difficult in an election year.
