Four candidates reportedly vying to become Delaware Supeme Court Chief Justice

A field of four candidates is seeking to become Delaware’s next Supreme Court Chief Justice.

Delaware Law Weekly reports the Judicial Nominating Commission received only four applications before Tuesday’s noon deadline.

The publication says those vying for the job are Supreme Court Justice Carolyn Berger, Superior Court Judge Jan Jurden, Court of Chancery Chancellor Leo Strine Jr. and Superior Court President Judge James Vaughn Jr.

The Nomination Commission will now review the four applicants. The commission will then send Gov. Jack Markell (D-Delaware) a list of at least three names to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of current Chief Justice Myron Steele at the end of the month.

Markell will make his nomination from that list and submit it for approved by the State Senate. That’s expected to happen when the General Assembly returns to work in January.

You can read more about the field of candidates in Jeff Mordock's piece at Delaware Law Weekly's website. Mordock is also a contributor to WDDE's weekly program - The Green and discussed the search for the next Chief Justice on last week's show.
