The Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles is giving out free E-Z Pass transponders this holiday season.
From November 1st to December 31st residents of any state that open a new individual account with the Delaware toll collection agency will receive a complimentary transponder for their vehicle. A transponder typically costs for $15.
On average, two out of three vehicles that traveling through Delaware's three main toll plazas - I-95 in Newark, Biddle's Corner near Middletown, and the Dover toll plaza - take advantage of the electronic collection system by utilizing its highway-speed toll lanes.
Mike Williams, DMV Chief of Administrative Policy & Communications, says one goal of the promotion sign up more users with an eye toward easing congestion during periods of heavy travel like holidays and beach weekends.
“We look at it as a benefit, as reducing the congestion time and making the drive better for the motorists," Williams said. "The less backup you have at the toll plaza, the simpler and more happier the driver is going be.”
Williams adds there are other potential benefits to drivers signing up for E-Z Pass, including discounts for commuters who use it frequently.
“If you use it more than thirty times in thirty days, you do receive a reduction in the total amount that you pay. That’s basically three weeks of work, five days a week and you go in the morning and the evening, so that’s a convenient discount for heavy, normal users.”
The state moves an average of 2,300 transponders a month, and has issued over 350,000 since E-ZPass was introduced in the state in 1999.
