DEMA to distribute potassium iodide tablets this week

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency is distributing potassium iodide tablets to residents living within a ten-mile radius of the Salem/Hope Creek nuclear power plants.

Agency officials will hand out the tablets to people with expired pills or new residents in the area Thursday at the Townsend Fire Station.

Potassium iodide can help protect your thyroid from certain exposure to radiation, but won’t guard against external radiation.

Those eligible for the tablets should bring a photo ID or another proof of residency.

The pills are available over-the-counter at some local pharmacies for people living outside of the ten-mile radius.

Doors at the Townsend Fire Station open at noon and close at 7 P-M.
