Dover Air Force Base has reached a deal with a private utility company to provide potable water service for the next 50 years.
The U.S. Department of Defense has entered a $32-million deal with Tidewater Utilities to own and maintain all water utility assets at the base and provide upgrades as needed.
Tidewater is owned by the Middlesex Water Company, which provides water and wastewater services primarily in New Jersey and Delaware.
For three years, Tidewater has had a temporary agreement with the base to provide water services while upgrades are made to the base’s water supply system.
The 50-year agreement, which is set to begin next September, is subject to approval by the Delaware Public Service Commission.
