The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is again citing a Wilmington manufacturer after it failed to safely store hazardous materials.
The state previously warned the Homalite Division of the Brandywine Investment Group after a chemical known as diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate or IPP was improperly stored and subsequently exploded at their facility last September.
IPP is a volatile compound used to manufacture plastics and must be kept at low temperatures to prevent explosions.
DNREC ordered the company to store the chemical in a reinforced freezer with safety alarms, but it failed to comply during two separate inspections in December and July.
Homalite told DNREC they ordered the equipment, but it hadn’t arrived before the compliance check.
It now has until October 1st to install the freezer, or they will no longer be allowed to store or handle the chemical.
