A first inning rally was all Newark National needed to capture its opening round contest at the Little League World Series.
The Mid-Atlantic region champs came out swinging, scoring five in the top of the first en route to a 6-3 victory over the Midwest champs from Iowa.
Joey Davis made the most of that run support, allowing just two runs and one while striking out 5 in four and two-third innings on the mound.
Nathan Hardcastle chipped in with two hits, an RBI and a tremendous defensive play at shortstop in the fourth inning. He also pitched the final inning and a third.
Next up for Newark National is a winners bracket game with the West region champs from Chula Vista, California. That’s Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in Williamsport, Pa. It will be shown live on ESPN.
Chula Vista used a seven-inning no-hitter from Grant Holman– the first extra inning no hitter at World Series in the pitch-count era – to defeat the Great Lakes region champ from Michigan 3-0.
