Brandywine Zoo's Monkey House hit by fallen tree

The Brandywine Zoo in Wilmington was closed Saturday after a large tree fell on the Monkey House, destroying the building’s roof and damaging a wall.

The building is home to nearly over 20 monkeys and some other exotic animals. No injuries were reported to either animals or people – though officials say three smaller monkeys are under veterinary observation as a precautionary. The rest have been temporarily sent to zoos in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

City of Wilmington building officials are assessing the building, and zoo officials say that portion of the zoo will be closed indefinitely. The rest of the zoo reopens Sunday morning at 10 with all programs and events taking place as scheduled.

Starting Monday, Zoo Camp will move to Blue Ball Barn. Campers can be dropped of there between 8-8:30am. For additional information, parents of campers can call (302) 571-7788, extension 209.
