Report shows Wilmington crime down in first six months of 2013

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams (D) is touting innovative police tactics and new neighborhood and youth initiatives for a significant decline in crime over the last six months.

Overall, crime is down 24 percent in Delaware’s largest city according to a report issued Monday by Wilmington’s police department. That includes a 12-point drop in Part 1 offenses, which include violent crimes. Compared to the same period last year, the number of homicides has been cut in half.

Last February, Williams introduced a public safety plan aimed at creating safer neighborhoods. The plan included assigning specialized police units to high crime areas, as well as variety of youth programs to boost employment, creative activities and scholarship opportunities.
