Diplomat killed in Afghanistan returned home through Dover Air Force Base

Dover Air Force Base is hosting a ceremony Monday for the young American diplomat killed in southern Afghanistan over the weekend.

Anne Smedinghoff was one of five Americans killed in a suicide car bombing while delivering textbooks to school children on Saturday.

A source close to the family confirms her remains are being flown to the Base for a dignified transfer ceremony. Under Secretary of State Patrick Kennedy, Ambassador David Pearce and other officials are expected to attend.

The family has requested a private ceremony.

Dover Air Force Base is home to the largest military mortuary in the Department of Defense. The remains of most foreign service personnel killed overseas are traditionally brought to Dover before being transferred to family.
