AstraZeneca announces additional layoffs, more Delaware cuts not ruled out

AstraZeneca announced another 2,300 layoffs worldwide Thursday – and its possible more Delaware jobs could be lost in this latest round cuts.

The pharmaceutical giant axed 1,200 jobs at its North American headquarters in Wilmington earlier this week. 550 of those will be transferred to other locations. They are not included in today’s announcement.

AstraZeneca spokesman Tony Jewell says the majority of the layoffs revealed Thursday morning involve workers overseas.

“A large percentage of them have already begun and have been communicated to staff previously and they’re largely being felt in Europe,” said Jewell.

He adds the company is still deciding where else to trim and would not rule out Delaware.

“The additional ones that haven’t been announced, we don’t know where those will be. But it could be anywhere in the world out of an employee base of more than 50,000 and that’s going to be implemented over the next three years,” said Jewell.

Today’s announcement brings the company’s total number of planned layoffs worldwide to just over 5,000 over the next three years.

AztraZeneca stock was up slightly after news of the plan was unveiled at their annual investors day conference in New York City.
