Chilly temps and some snow on the ground provided an appropriate atmosphere for Sunday’s 22nd annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge.
The event drew 3,500 participants who raced into the Atlantic Ocean at Rehoboth Beach where the water temperature was 38 degrees and the air temperature was 30 degrees.
The 2013 plunge raised $652,000 for Special Olympics Delaware. In 22 years, more than $6.8 million has been raised to assist Special Olympics athletes throughout the First State.
Other Polar Bear Plunge events over the weekend also helped the cause. 757 runners took part in the Run to the Plunge, raising nearly $33,000. And the inaugural Pooch Plunge drew 51 dogs to wade in a pool on beach at $25 per dog.
