Sandy delivers blow to New Castle's Battery Park

As revealed in our Rising Threat series, the city of New Castle has seen significant flooding from the Delaware river in the past 5 years. Hurricane Sandy hit the shores of Battery Park, destroying a wooden pier and delivering major damage to the sea wall and walking path along the banks. Driftwood and debris--from plastic bottles to sporting equipment--was left behind in Sandy's wake, littering the perimeter and obstructing park-goers.

A stream of onlookers made their way in and out of the park, braving the chilly, biting wind and spray to get a look at the aftermath of the category 1 hurricane, while municipal crews were at work clearing the boat ramp of detritus. The city of New Castle is asking sightseers to stay away because they are slowing down the clean up process.

While homes were spared major damage from the rising Delaware River, the damage to the sea wall makes a bad situation worse, and has left the park in need of serious repair.
