As Hurricane Sandy makes its way up the eastern seaboard, Delawareans are bracing for damaging winds, heavy rains and major flooding along the coast.
The latest predictions put the state right in the middle of its path as it’s expected to make landfall late Monday and into Tuesday.
Bowers Beach resident Calvin Owens is preparing for the worst, with memories of last year’s Hurricane Irene fresh in his mind.
“Everything on Bowers Beach is going to be under water. You can see what happens. Frenchy’s dock and everything was torn off. But I think if it comes up the bay, we’re going to be in a lot of trouble, so I’m getting out of here,” said Owens.
Stacks of empty crab pots lined a stretch of the pier. Owens says he watched crab fishermen reeling in their pots all day, preparing to move to a safer harbor over the weekend.
Captain David Russell of the charter fishing boat Miss Shyanne in Bowers Beach was making final preparations to move the vessel northward and he’s not the only one.
“Everybody is, for the most part, pulling out or moving them to safe havens. I haven’t talked to everybody, but for the most part, everybody is going to secure their livelihood,” said Russell.
Other residents in the 300-person community are preparing by buying essential supplies and securing any outdoor items, ready if an evacuation notice is issued.
