Race fans will have a new lodging option when NASCAR returns to the First State in September.
Dover International Speedway is now offering premium camping tickets to customers flocking to the Monster Mile for the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.
The 289-dollar price tag nets fans a tent with two cots, two shower passes per day and a parking spot.
Gary Camp, spokesman for the speedway, says ticketholders consistently comment about prohibitive hotel costs during race weekends.
“It’s one of the biggest things that we struggle with at the track," said Camp. [It’s] folks would love to come to the races and we’re hearing that it’s not the cost of tickets – in some cases, it’s not even the gas to get here – it’s really the expense of everything combined and the hotel portion is the biggest piece of that.”
Camp adds he believes it’s also a good option for hardcore fans.
“The big selling point in my mind is the fact that it’s so close to all the activities on race weekend," Camp explained. "So, if you’re a race fan, you want to be at these races and you’re thrilled to be here for all three days or a few days of races, to be able to stay steps away from everything – in my mind – is very appealing.”
Camp notes the success of “glamping” or glamor camping during the Firefly Music Festival on the Speedway’s grounds as one of the reasons for offering the new option.
NASCAR returns to Dover September 27th.
