Strong storm hammers Camden, funnel cloud reported

Monday’s round of severe weather in the state may have included a tornado in Camden, Delaware.

The National Weather Service says it received multiple reports of a funnel cloud associated with a thunderstorm that rolled through Monday afternoon shortly after 3:30.

The Barclay Farm neighborhood on the south side of Camden is where the most of the damage was done. The Camden-Wyoming Fire department spokesman Dan Dilling said about 16 homes suffered damage. Of those 16 homes, 10 had "severe" damage and six were deemed uninhabitable. Dilling adds there was only one minor injury.

Barclay Farms resident Diane Flowers was among those left assessing the damage.

“The whole roof is taken off of the sunroom and parts are laying here and parts across the street. So, all my furniture is all wet and all my plants are thrown around and basically everything in there is destroyed," said Flowers.

Barclay Farms resident Bob Black was also picking up debris Monday night.

“All of the sudden I heard this ‘woosh’ you know like on television. You hear this big woosh of air and I looked out and there was a tree blowing through the air, pieces of roof blowing, and mailboxes were getting blown over. Shingles were flying, big – six by six piece of somebody’s roof hit the side of my house.

National Weather Service meteorologist Lee Robertson says an investigation of wherher or not a tornado hit is underway Tuesday...

"There were funnel clouds reported in the area. We do have a team investigating to see if there was any tornado touch down but we do not have any confirmation at this time. There should be some information later today whether it was or was not," said Robertson.

The storm caused power outages for residents in that area. As many as 12 hundred Delaware Electric Cooperative customers were without power in Kent County in the wake of the storm, but all had power restored by Monday evening.

Heavy rains were an issue in Northern Kent and Sussex Kent County. Flash flood advisories were in effect in the late afternoon and early evening Monday as areas including Middletown received as much as 4 inches of rain over the previous 24 hours.
