Rodney Square in Wilmington has never hosted a live theater production.

That changes next month when Delaware Shakespeare brings A Midsummer Night’s Dream there for a 4-day run.

“In most falls, we do what we call our Community Tour, where we take a Shakespeare play around the State - going to places like prisons and homeless shelters and community centers -  and that’s just not yet possible with COVID," said David Stradley, producing artistic director for Del Shakes. "So we thought what can we do to still share Shakespeare in a really broad way with a big stretch of our community.”

Stradley says that led them to approach the City of Wilmington about mounting a free Shakespeare play in Rodney Square.

Performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream are set for Thursday, September 16 through Saturday, September 18 at 7 p.m.  There’s also a Sunday matinee September 19 at 2 p.m.

If you plan to attend, bring your own chair and blanket. And you can also bring food.

Face coverings are encouraged.

Delaware Public Media' s arts coverage is made possible, in part, by support from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
