Museums across Delaware are getting creative during the Coronavirus pandemic.
While it’s been shut down, staff at The Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington worked on the launch of a public art initiative. And now that project is about to come to fruition.
“For many people who have driven by the Delaware Contemporary, we are in a now - celebrating this year - 20-year-old steel-clad building. And we’ve thought for many years about to enliven the exterior in our little corner of the Riverfront in Wilmington,” said Leslie Shaffer, executive director at The Delaware Contemporary.
Shaffer says they will unveil The Platform Gallery, an exterior gallery, during an Art Escape drive-thru event Friday, June 5 from 5-8 pm.
Shaffer notes that they’ve commissioned a series of artists to work with them on this public art initiative. Large-scale banners created by those artists will be featured on the exterior skin of The Delaware Contemporary on a rolling basis.
"Those artists will be creating large scale - and I’m talking really large scale - 30X30-feet, 28X28-feet - banners that will be installed on the exterior skin of our building,” said Shaffer.
She says when the project is finished and unveiled, what is now a metallic exterior will be enlivened with bold, beautiful explorations of contemporary art.
Shaffer says the inaugural show is titled "Stepping Out to Step In." It will feature three massive banners by Baltimore artist Theresa Chromati, enhanced with a soundscape produced by Chromati in collaboration with pop and electronic artists Pangelica.
