A local business woman and pastor is working to help female veterans.
Tyshee Jackson is bringing Eden Veterans Refuge to Smyrna.
“Eden Veterans Refuge is a transitional home for women vets, veterans and women veterans with children," said Jackson. :We also accept widowed veterans.”
The shelter opened two weeks ago can currently host six women and five children.
And Jackson also sees it as a hub to serve others in the community.
“During the week, we also have people who come in for job training, budgeting, resume building. We have postings for jobs that are available," said Jackson. "Then we have a food bank for those who may be in need of food. And also a clothing closet that is free to any ladies or referrals for people who may have gone through fires or things like that.”
Jackson notes she’s seen the hardship female vets face first-hand through family members who are veterans that served. She adds that many times women vets have different needs from men, especially when it comes to healthcare.
Jackson hopes to expand Eden Veterans Refuse to add additional beds in the future.
According to statistics from the Department of Veterans Affairs, women comprised the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in 2018. The DVA also estimated that nearly 40,000 women veterans may be homeless by 2025.
