Two city council seats up for grabs in Newark election

Tuesday is Election Day in the City of Newark.

Voters head to the polls to decide a pair of contested city council races.

In the 3rd District, Jen Wallace and Arlynn Hall are facing off to fill the seat held by Rob Gifford, who decided not to run for re-election.  Gifford has endorsed Wallace in the race.

In the 5th district, incumbent Luke Chapman seeks to fend off a challenge from Donna Means.  Chapman has held the seat since 2012.

Winners will earn two-year terms on city council.

6th District Councilman Stuart Markum and Mayor Polly Sierer are running unopposed – giving Markum another two year term on council and Sierer three more years in the mayor’s office.

Polls opened at 7 am and will close at 8 pm.  There are two polling places:

District 3:  Aetna Fire Station #7 on 7 Thorn Lane
District 5:  First Presbyterian Church, Memorial Hall at 292 W. Main Street
