Newark residents are being advised by Delaware’s Division of Public Health of a positive case of rabies in a skunk.

DPH says two people were potentially exposed to the skunk’s tissue/saliva after their dog found and killed it in their backyard. Both have begun post-exposure prophylaxis treatment.

The skunk was found in the area west of Route. 273, near S. Brownleaf Road, Sonant Drive and Stature Drive and tested positive for rabies this past Wednesday.

Anyone who thinks they might have been bitten, scratched, or come in contact with the skunk should immediately contact their doctor or call the DPH Rabies Program at 744-4995.

And anyone who thinks a skunk may have bitten their pet should call their veterinarian and report the exposure to the Delaware Department of Agriculture.
