The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) is gearing up to host two drive-thru pet food pantries this week to help families in need.
The last thing the BVSPCA wants right now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, is for dog and cat owners to be worrying about their pets.
“It’s a high stress situation; they need those pets right by their side. So we’re going to help them with free pet food,” said Linda Torelli, the marketing director with the BVSPCA.
And Torelli says they'll be handing out food at two downstate location.
“We have two drive-thru pantries coming up this week - on Thursday in Georgetown and then on Friday in Dover," said Torrelli. "Folks can come in and just let us know about their pets. And we’re going to set them up with free food for their dogs and cats.”
Torelli says the Georgetown event is Thursday at Sussex Academy on Airport Blvd. in Georgetown. The Friday event will be at the Kent County Administrative Complex on Bay Road in Dover. Both will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The pantries drive-thru format requires people to arrive in a vehicle, where they should remain while BVSPCA staff asks, from a 6-foot distance, for information on your pets and then loads the food into your trunk or hatchback.
Since the pandemic started, the Brandywine Valley SPCA has distributed more than 38,000 pounds of pet food.
