A $3.65 million dollar paving project got underway this week in Sussex County.

The “Forgotten Mile” is a one-and-a-half-mile stretch of road between Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach.

C.R. McLeod is the communications director for Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DelDOT).

He says it’s been more than 10 years since any kind of work was done on that stretch of road.

“The road surface itself is ready for an upgrade. And again, this is the start of an opportunity for us to also improve and make sure the pedestrian and bicycle access and signage are all up to the current requirements, just to insure safety for everyone that’s using that popular stretch of roadway,” McLeod said.

McLeod says the work will have some impact on motorists. There will be intermittent lane and shoulder closures while the work is being done.

He says DelDOT anticipates crews working until about mid-May, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. - weather permitting. Crews will come back in September to wrap up the project.
