Delaware’s November shotgun deer hunting season opens Friday and DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife is reminding sportsmen what they need to do to be properly licensed.
DNREC’s Hunter Education Program says to purchase a Delaware hunting license, hunters born on or after January 1, 1967 need to have a Hunter Safety Card that shows they’ve taken a Basic Hunter Education Safety Course.
And hunters must carry that card at all times while hunting.
Delaware’s shotgun deer season runs from Friday, November 10 through Sunday, November 19. It’s considered the busiest and most popular of all the deer seasons.
It’s expected Delaware hunters will harvest about 14,000 deer this year, with nearly 6,400 of them taken during the November shotgun deer season.
Delaware hunters can also take aim at red fox, raccoon and opossum, Canada geese and brant, ducks, coots and mergansers, woodcock, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, sea ducks, rig-necked pheasant and cottontail rabbit, just to name a few, at various times this month.
Hunters who wish to donate venison are encouraged to participate in Delaware’s Sportsmen Against Hunger Program. All donated deer will be processed free of charge and the meat will be distributed to participating charitable groups.
