The bridge over a major thoroughfare in Rehoboth Beach will be closed for three weeks starting this week.

The bridge over Silver Lake, which connects Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach will be closed for repairs starting Wednesday.

“Beginning at 7 a.m. we are going to be closing the SR 1-A Silver Lake Drive Bridge to make some necessary repairs during the month of November. We know this is an inconvenience to the local community, however doing a full closure actually allows us to get this work done,” said C.R. McLeod - community relations director for Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DelDOT).

McLeod says repairs will be fairly extensive and are necessary before the bridge deteriorates further.

“What the contractor will be doing is replacing the bridge joints, repairing the asphalt on both sides of the roadway and also repairing some of the timber slab that makes up this bridge. There’s also some concrete work that needs to take place. So this is a full bridge rehabilitation,” said McLeod.

McLeod says all this comes at a cost of just over $1million.

Detour signs have already been put in place and McLeod says emergency responders are aware of the project and do not expect it to affect response times to calls.

McLeod adds DelDOT crews hope to have the work completed by November 30, 2018 - weather permitting.
