State environmental officials are investigating how and why Sunoco’s Pennsylvania facility near Claymont produced an emergency flare that released high levels of pollutants into the environment.

Delaware’s Division of Air Quality handed Sunoco Partners Marketing & Terminals a violation notice earlier this month.

The state claims a flare at the portion of the Sunoco facility in Delaware was connected to additional feeds, causing it to discharge high levels of volatile organic compounds into the environment.

Officials add Sunoco did not disclose their flare operations in their semi-annual report.

Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control would not comment on the action, since possible enforcement is still being evaluated.

Sunoco Partners Marketing & Terminals says it has received the violation notice and they are reviewing it.
