Governor Jack Markell is stressing the need for Delaware small businesses to access global markets so they can expand and create jobs.

In his weekly message, the governor said programs like the Global Delaware Initiative and the State Trade and Export Promotion, or STEP, program will help entrepreneurs enter new markets.

These programs help with trade missions for businesses and provide matching funds to a company for marketing abroad.

About a hundred people, representing businesses and nonprofits, gathered in Rehoboth Beach earlier this week for a seminar on emergency preparedness.

Pop-up businesses open for the holidays in Delaware

The holidays mean another round of small businesses are popping up in various Delaware downtowns. They're part of a state program that chooses new start-ups to receive free rent in vacant properties each year.

For a fifth year, Downtown Milford Inc. is encouraging consumers to spend their holiday shopping dollars locally.

Part of a national movement, Small Business Saturday was developed in response to the mega market Black Friday and Cyber Monday days.

Earlier this month, Congress passed a resolution honoring Small Business Saturday.

The city of Wilmington Wednesday was selected as a winner in President Obama’s “Startup in a Day" competition.
