"Bin It to Win It:" Game aims to educate middle schoolers about recycling

DNREC’s Recycling Program is offering “Bin It to Win It,” a new education recycling game being offered to Delaware middle schools.";s:3:

State officials are trying to help young kids better understand how recycling works and they’re offering to middle schools around the First State a fun way to do that.

“Bin It to Win It” is the name of a new recycling game being offered to Delaware middle schools through DNREC’s Recycling Program.

The goal - educate students about single-stream recycling.

“We have a referee that is actually outfitted in a black and white striped shirt; they have a whistle; they have a timer and we bring the ref, the shirt, the equipment and bins of trash to schools and to other events or other activities, by invitation,” explains DNREC’s  Recycling Program spokeswoman Jackie Howard.

Howard says the game is set up and on one side there are bins of trash that either go into recycling or into trash. The teams of students have two minutes to make the decision on where the items go.

When the two minute are up, the recycling referee checks the bins - retrieving incorrectly-placed items and explaining why the items should or should not be recycled.

The team with the most correctly-placed items wins and gets pens made of recycled materials as prizes.
