Wilmington City Council will take at least a week longer to fill a council vacancy.
City Council was scheduled to vote on a candidate to fill the 1st District seat Thursday. But the meeting has been postponed until next week.
According to a statement, the meeting was moved to accommodate a number of council members’ scheduling conflicts.
In the statement, Council President Hanifa Shabazz said several items on the agenda were the “culmination of weeks and months of work, debates and public engagement.” She said she moved the meeting to ensure Council’s decisions on these matters are “all-inclusive.”
An ordinance to approve a contract for operation of the City’s public access TV station was also set to be introduced this week.
Last week, a Council Committee of the Whole recommended retired magistrate judge Linda Gray to fill the vacancy. The first candidate to reach to this stage in the process failed a full-council vote late last year.
The 1st District seat has been vacant since November, when the councilmember who previously held it was elected to the General Assembly.
