Whimsical sculpture 'Bus Stop' installed at Rehoboth City Hall

A sculpture by an award-winning artist now sits in the atrium at City Hall in Rehoboth Beach.

The sculpture is the latest addition to the relationship forged between the Rehoboth Art League and  City of Rehoboth.

The Art League’s executive director Sara Ganter says there’s already an exhibition wall in the atrium, several pieces from its permanent collection on display, and an outdoor mural.

Now she says - this sculpture joins them as a long-term loan to the City.

“We acquired the sculpture (in 2019 ftom the Academy Art Museum in Easton, MD) - it’s called “Bus Stop” by Gary Hughes - a couple years ago. And it’s a substantial piece," said Ganter. "We approached the City right away about sort of integrating this 3D piece also into their site and they were all for it.”

Ganter says “Bus Stop” is a tall, white and whimsical sculpture of three people waiting for a bus.

Gary Hughes was an artist, cartoonist, designer and a sculptor who started his own animation company in Kensington, Maryland in the 1960’s.   He and his wife moved to Rehoboth in 2013 where he lived and worked until his death in July 2016.

Ganter says the City plans to hold a dedication ceremony for “Bus Stop” once pandemic restrictions ease.  She says it can be seen from outside City Hall and hopes it will draw people inside to see the other art on display there.
