Venture Outdoors Fest seeks to draw people outside

Delaware Public Media

Delaware has many outdoor recreational activities available to residents and next month Delaware State Parks will show them off with their Venture Outdoors Fest.

Riley Hays, an interpretive specialist with Delaware State Parks says the event is designed to get Delawareans engaged with the outdoors.

“There’s the zip-lining, horseback riding, mountain biking, stand up paddle boarding, hiking, we’re having archery, all kinds of good stuff and its all for one low price and every single thing that we’re offering is in at least one Delaware State Park,” said Hays.

Hays adds the event at Lums Pond State Park in Bear is especially designed to engage young adults, especially millennials.

“They tend to go to parks and they just go for a quick run or play a quick game and they don’t take time to build a good connection with nature so Venture Outdoors offers them a lot of different activities that they can try for the first time or maybe get more familiar with and it’s all offered in at least one state park," said Hays.

Adult beverage samples will be provided to those 21 and older, and live music will be offered on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as s’mores around a campfire.  Participants also have the option of camping out for one or two nights free of charge.

The event takes place Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17 but registration for Venture Outdoors Fest closes May 1st. More information is available at destateparks.com/vfest.
