U.S. Navy Band Commodores coming to Springer Middle School

Wilmington is the first stop on a U.S. Navy Band’s latest tour.

The U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy’s jazz ensemble was formed in 1969 - and have performed the best of big band jazz for 50 years.

And the current 18-member group carries on that legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world - including Musician 1st Class Benjamin Ford, who plays the trombone, “I started when I was 9-years-old. And the only reason I played it was because someone in my family played it and then quit; so it was in the house.”

Musician 1st Class Kevin McDonald plays the drums, “Probably longer than my parents wish I played………….laughing.”

The Navy Band Commodores will be at Springer Middle School in North Wilmington on Thursday, October 17, 2019.  And McDonald says you can expect a variety of offerings,“When any individual comes to a Commodores concert, they’ll hear everything from patriotic favorites to jazz standards, famous vocal tunes from the Great American Songbook from jazz greats like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.”

He says the concert will also feature numbers from jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Count Basie. And he says the group honors this country’s veterans by playing The Armed Forces Salute at every show.

The show at Springer Middle School starts at 7 p.m. You can get tickets here.
