The UD Symphony Orchestra heads to China this week for a concert tour - but will play locally one more time before departing.

The UD Symphony Orchestra heads to China this week for a concert tour.

The 90 member orchestra will spend 12 days in China playing halls of Beijing, XiAn, WuXi and Shanghai.

UD music professor and  founding artistic director of  Master Players Festival and School Xiang Gow says the concert also offers student performers a unique educational opportunity.

“For our students to really encounter a tremendously different culture and perform professionally at some of China’s most prestigious concert halls...actually some of the world’s best concert venues,” said Gow.

Before leaving for China Tuesday, the UD Symphony Orchestra plays a send-off concert Monday at the university’s Center for the Arts, Thompson Theatre at 7 p.m.  Tickets are available here.

“We’re going to perform the send-off concert at the University of Delaware Newark campus. The location is the Thompson Theatre inside of the Roselle Center for the Arts; people can get tickets. We are performing every piece we are touring with, including a new composition by Delaware-based composer Mark Hagerty," Gow said.
