Restoration of a pair of historic buildings in Sussex County is finally complete.
The $1.9 million project focused on two buildings on The Circle in Georgetown.
“The first one is #37 The Circle, which is directly next door to the Town Hall. We converted that building starting in May 2017, into our administrative offices. And then we began work on #39 The Circle,which was the existing Town Hall and completely rehabilitated that building,” said Gene Dvornick, Georgetown’s town manager.
He notes that age was catching up with the old Town Hall.
“The original Town Hall building was built in 1918 and it was given to the Town of Georgetown in 1965 by the Wilmington Trust Company," said Dvornick. "But it was a building that had years of age and had some issues with some minor structural issues; it needed a new roof; it needed the bricks to be repointing and certainly could use some electrical updates - so we did that.”
Dvornick says fixing up the second building made sense because it is right next door to Town Hall and was perfect for relocating the administrative offices.
A ribbon cutting and open house last week marked the completion of the project that began with passage of a 2015 referendum to pay for the work.
