Sussex Tech launches effort to learn more about student applicants

The Sussex Technical School District is asking the University of Delaware (UD) to study applicants to Sussex County’s career-technical high school.";

The Sussex Tech School District has hired a consultant to learn more about students applicants.

The district is contracting the University of Delaware to gather and study data on applicants to Sussex County’s career-technical high school.

Superintendent Stephen Guthrie says local lawmakers suggested collaborating with UD,

“We were approached by Representative (Tim) Dukes and Representative (Danny) Short to see if there’s anything we could do to try to tailor our program to the consituent’s need.”

Guthrie calls it a great opportunity to improve Sussex Tech’s admissions process and marketing, “At no cost to us - funded by the University of Delaware - to survey former students and current students to see what attracts them to Sussex Tech and what they’re looking for in our schools.”

Guthrie notes the survey will be a comprehensive one.

"They’ll be hosting various town meetings over the next several months, reaching out to students and families who have applied to Sussex Tech - some of which who got in and others didn’t - so we also want to talk about the application process. The application process is currently a lottery.”

Guthrie says Sussex Tech saw its largest number of applications ever last year, with 802 Sussex County 8th grade students applying to attend.

The UD Institute for Public Administration’s (IPA’s) research will start in September and is expected to be completed in early 2020.
