State reports first flu case in Kent County this year

This year's flu season has arrived in Kent County.

The state Division of Public Health has confirmed its first case of influenza in central Delaware. A 33-year-old woman is recovering at home from the B strain of the virus.

The report comes a week after the state's first flu case of the season, which cropped up in New Castle County.

Last year, 28 people died of flu in Delaware -- seven times as many as the year before. Officials say the 2014 strain was particularly nasty and resisted their vaccine.

But they expect the shot to be more effective this year, and are urging everyone over six months of age to get it.

The DPH is holding several free flu shot clinics around the state in coming weeks:

New Castle County

  • Oct. 23 -  Newark Farmers Market, 2515 Kirkwood Hwy, Newark, DE, 11 am - 2:30 pm
  • Nov. 3 -YMCA, 1000 North Walnut Street, Wilmington, DE , 10 am – 12 pm

 
Kent County

  • Oct. 30 - Spence’s Bazaar, 550 S. New St., Dover, DE, 9 am – 2 pm
  • Oct. 31 - AME Church Women's Missionary Society, 100 W Mispillion Street, Harrington, DE, 12 pm – 2 pm

 
Sussex County

  • Oct. 24 – Rt. 13 Outlet Market, 11290 Trussum Pond, Road, Laurel, DE, 11 am – 4 pm
  • Oct. 31 - Seaford High School, 399 N Market Street Ext., Seaford, DE, 9 am – 1 pm
