State prepares to help schools deal with pandemic learning loss

The state has a plan to do its part to assist schools and students who have suffered from interrupted learning during the COVID pandemic.

 

The state is focusing its efforts to help school districts and charters make up for lost learning over the last 13 months on four core actions.

It will support training and professional learning, efforts to leverage data to diagnose unfinished learning, and building structures to accelerate learning.

And Education Secretary Dr. Susan Bunting says the state is investing federal funds it received on high-quality instructional materials and providing licenses for those materials to make access statewide easy. 

"Zearn math would be provided for every Rising 1st to 8th grader, and this is a well-respected program that has lessons for 12 weeks for example 30 minutes a day," said Bunting during a town hall with Gov. John Carney Wednesday night. "Some of this could be done independently for some students so we also will be training and preparing teachers to be coaches as they go through these experiences."

The plan also includes a Summer Booster Literacy program for every rising first through fifth grader.

Bunting says the objective is to assist students immediately.

"The focus is going to be on helping all of our children. We have a very dedicated staff. They're looking at what they need to do to provide the extra learning opportunities that our students need at this point and deserve so together we will make that happen all through the summer and into next school year," said Bunting.
