Smyrna and Delmar capture state H.S. football titles

Smyrna and Delmar are celebrating state championships in high school football.

Smyrna captured its third straight Division I state crown, outlasting Middletown 30-27 at Delaware Stadium.

Will Knight led the Eagles to the title.  Delaware’s all-time leading rusher put on another show, rushing for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He also threw for one TD.  His 79-touchdown run with just over two and half minutes to play was the decisive score.  Smyrna is only the second Division I team to win 3 consecutive state titles, joining Newark, which won five in a row from 1997-2001.

The 2017 Division II belongs to Delmar, which edged Milford 14-7 at Delaware Stadium.

It’s Delmar’s 7th state crown, and first since its last trip to the final in 2009.
