Sen. Coons calls for delay in Kavanaugh confirmation hearings

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s junior Sen. Chris Coons is one of several Senate Democrats pushing for a delay in the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Brett Kavanaugh.

Confirmation hearings are scheduled to start Sept. 4th. But Democrats have complained they haven’t gotten many of the documents they have requested from his judicial record.

And that was before President Donald Trump’s former lawyer implicated him in two felonies. Michael Cohen says Trump directed him before the election to pay hush money to two women he allegedly had affairs with.

Coons said the Senate shouldn’t rush a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.

“Judge Kavanaugh could easily serve on the Supreme Court for 25 or 30 years and have a profound influence on the direction of American Constitutional law and our whole society,” he said.

But Coons says despite that and the president’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort being found guilty of bank and tax fraud, Republicans plan to move forward.

“I’ve spoken to Republican colleagues who have said bluntly 'yes' they will continue." said Coons. "I think that’s the wrong course.”
