Schools close ahead of Wednesday winter storm

Delaware Public Media

Many First State schools aren’t taking any chances with Wednesday’s forecasted winter weather.

In New Castle County, Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial, New Castle County Vo-Tech and Red Clay School Districts are closed Wednesday.

In Central Delaware, the Capital, Caesar Rodney, Lake Forest, Milford Polytech, Smyrna and Woodbridge School Districts are closed.

In Sussex County, the Cape Henlopen, Delmar, Indian River, Laurel, Seaford and Sussex Tech School Districts will be closed today.

Delaware State University and the University of Delaware are closed Wednesday, along with Delaware Tech’s Dover, Wilmington and Stanton campuses. Del Tech’s Georgetown campus will open at 10:30 a.m.

Delaware's General Assembly has announced its scheduled Joint Finance Committee budget hearings scheduled for Wednesday are postponed.

The National Weather Service says Delaware can expect snow, changing to sleet and then rain across the state.  The snow is expected to begin in the morning, coinciding with the morning commute. The change over to sleet and then rain will occur sooner in Kent and Sussex Counties, while snow could linger into early afternoon in New Castle County.

The northern part of the state could see 2-4 inches from the storm before it changes to rain.  Central Delaware is expected to get 2-4 inches, while the forecast for Sussex County is for less than an inch.

What snow falls isn't likely to stick around long.  Sunshine and temperatures in the low 50s are forecast for Thursday.
