Route 1/Route 16 interchange project could start in early 2022

A two to three year highway road construction project is coming to Sussex County.

A Route 1/Route 16 interchange project in Milton in the works for about a decade is now closer to reality.

“We’ve actually begun right-of-way acquisition for some of the property that we need around that intersection in order to build a new grade-separated overpass there that will eliminate the current traffic signal and congestion that ultimately results, especially during the peak summer season,” said DelDOT director of communications C.R. McLeod.

He says the project goes out to bid this summer.  And that will determine the entire cost of the interchange with construction to start hopefully by early 2022.

McLeod notes that this interchange will be similar to the one completed a few years ago on Route 1 in Frederica and another one completed recently in Milford - both in Kent County.

But unlike those interchanges, roundabouts will be installed on arterial roads to accommodate local traffic.

Nine crossovers in the area will get safety upgrades as part of the project, and the one at Reynolds Road and Route 1 will close entirely.

“It’s going to be a much safer interchange, especially as we see that continued growth in Sussex County for many years to come. So we’re eager to get this project awarded,” said McLeod.
