What a difference a year makes. Last March, The University of Delaware signed Monte Ross to a new three-year contract. Friday, school officials told him him he’s out of a job.
In between, the Blue Hens suffered through a 7-23 season that included a 2-16 record in the Colonial Athletic Association.
And earlier this week, the Hens top player, sophomore guard Kory Holden told the school he’s transferring.
"At this time I believe it is best that the University start a new chapter with the men’s basketball program. I have notified Coach Ross of the decision and have thanked him for his service to the University. I admire the commitment he had to the young men in his program and the impact he and the program have had on the local community through community outreach." said UD’s interim athletic director Matthew Robinson in statement.
In 10 seasons as head coach, Ross compiled a 132-184 record. The highlight of his tenure came two years ago when the Hens won the CAA title and earned the program’s first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1999. But since then, the Hens have gone 17-43.
UD officials say they will begin the search for Ross’ replacement once the school’s has hired its new athletic director.
Former athletic director Eric Ziady stepped down in December.
