Ross gets new deal with UD

Monte Ross will remain men’s head basketball coach at the University of Delaware. UD officials announced Thursday that the school has signed Ross to a new three-year contract.

In nine seasons at UD, Ross has compiled a 125-161 record, but his most successful campaign was a year ago – when he led the Blue Hens to a 25-and-10 record, a Colonial Athletic Association championship and their first NCAA tournament berth since 1999.

The school did not offer Ross a contract extension after that season. With the coach entering the final year of his current deal, that move fueled speculation about his future in Newark.  That speculation intensified after this year’s squad started 0-10 – but the Hens turned things around – going 9-9 in CAA play to wind up 10-20 overall.

In a statement, Ross said he looks forward to continuing at UD.

"It is a privilege to lead these talented young athletes, and I take very seriously my responsibility to ensure that their success on the court is matched by achievement in the classroom and personal accomplishment in the greater community," said Ross. "I know that great things lie ahead for them, for UD and for our dedicated fans."

"We are confident that Coach Ross has the passion and drive to build on the momentum of the past two years and to help our student-athletes become leaders in the game, in the campus community and in their lives going forward," said UD president Patrick Harker in his own statement.

Terms of Ross’ new deal were not announced.
